* this is my first story on DA, based on a rp, I do with atemswildRose *

setting: a poor section of domino city

time: 2000-2025ish

main: Jessie-rose areia, me ( Emily areia ), bakura,  yami, yugi, atem, ryou, joey and kaiba. * slight OOC for kaiba * * mentions tea, EW... *

things are different here in the crap hole part of domino city, very different then where you live I'm sure. if you live here than the odds are you don't have much money. and if you do you can ' rent ' room to someone who is on the street. but since they have no cash, they pay the rent in a very unusual way. they pay with their bodies. the person giving out the rent space, may do what they want to you on rent day, making many people fear it. well, me at least. the person may chose who they allow to rent, and offer you a price, if you so choose to accept the price you MUST pay up. if you refuse, you will be evicted, publicly humiliated, then sent to jail. I know many renters on my street, Jessie-rose, my dear sister, Joey wheeler, our good friend. And of course tea, no one likes her, she fends for herself really, but she has been trying to get atems attention for years. My story begins when I first met my rent givers....

May 30, 2000

it was another warm sunny day in the streets of domino. And I was just on my way to work at the domino hospital. I was lucky to have gotten this job, Jessie got stuck at domino's burgers, the top burger joint in the city. I got paid rather well, enough to get food, and new clothes when needed. Most of the time I split my pay check with Jessie and Joey. And so I was on my way to get another pay check, and just in time too. " hey, girl. " I turn to see who was talking to me, I recognized the white hair and arrogant posture right away. Bakura. " oh, hello bakura, can I help you ? " the rule for the homeless was to always be respectful towards the rich. " what's your name?  " blinking in confusion I mumble. " Emily, why? " bakura gives me a smirk driving a shiver down my spine. " well Emily, how would you like a place to stay? " I knew what this was. This was an offer for rent. " what's the price? " I ask cautiously. " not much, just once a month, I get to claim your time. " I thought about Jessie and Joey, I didn't want to leave them behind. Alone, and broke. " it sounds like a nice offer, but I can't just leave my sister and friend alone out here. " bakura shrugs. " well, maybe if they get a rent themselves you might consider it? " I nod. " maybe. " bakura looks at me and smiles. " ok, I will hold you to that. " and with that said he turned on his heel, hands shoved in the pockets of his long black trench coat, and stalks away.

       well another day another dollar as i always say. and here i was paycheck in hand after another day at work. i was also thinking about bakura's offer. as much as i didn't want to leave my sister and friend alone, the idea of a home was very apealling. " emmy!!! your back!! " jessie runs out of the alley we call home. " you will NEVER guess what happened today!! " i could tell she was very excited about something. but before i could even venture a guess, jessie explodes. " atem! he offered me a rent! me!! " jessie had every right to be happy then. she had been crushing on the handsom egyptian for as long as i could remember. " that's..... great... " i reply halfheartedly. " and seto asked joey as well! isn't this great! we both have a home now and- oh.....!! " jessie looked at me. " you don't have a home yet... do you? " i look down at my shoes, now scuffed and torn from age and much wear. " no, not yet. but don't worry. you should be happy now, i'll be fine here. and i mean really, you got atem's attention! thats really good! " i put on a fake smile to hide my feeling of betrayal. " ok... i'll try! " jessie turns and runs away towards the ally. - after giving me a bone crunching hug - and i soon follow suit.

     atem came and picked jessie up a while later, seto did the same. and so i was left all alone in the ally way. again. not that i minded being alone, in fact, i loved it. it gave me time to think. about life, about the past, and future. about love. i jolt as the word cuts into my mind like a dagger. would i ever find love? i wasn't sure. what i was sure of though, was that the night air was quickly losing heat. shuddering as the cold wraps around my body in a icy hug, i wonder what would happen to me if i spent another winter out here. i couldn't keep this up, and i knew it. " hey, where is everyone? " the smug voice tears me from my thoughts. " what? oh, it's you. " i turned to see bakura stepping out of the shadows. " they rented. " i reply cooly. " oh, well then, did you think about my offer? " i nod. " yes, why? is it still open? " bakura smiles . " why yes. yes it is, i take it you are excepting? " he reaches out a hand to me. " then shall we? " i smile slowly and take his hand and stand up. " ok... " and that is how i found myself entering a world of love, hate pain and betrayal....
